THERoman Numeral VCollection
Representing the 5th-generation to run the family business, the Roman Numeral V collection celebrates the long lineage behind Erkers1879. Our business has been family owned and opperated for nearly 1.5 centuries, making us the oldest company in the US still owned by its founding family. We now aim to uphold and build upon the legacy left behind by previous generations.
In honor of the city that started it all, the STL Flag collection is an homage to our deep roots in the city of St. Louis. In 1879, our ancestors founded the Erker Optical Co. in downtown St. Louis, which grew into a legacy passed down amongst five generations of Erkers. To this day, we are still based in the city and proud to call St. Louis our home.
In 1927, the Spirit of St. Louis flew from New York to Paris, which was the world's very first solo nonstop transatlantic flight. Marking our first international project, we designed the famous goggles Charles Lindbergh wore throughout the flight. This was also our first time back in Europe since our ancestors' departure from Germany in the late 1800s.
Once a classical, revolutionary instrument used in battle, the trumpet later became the instrument of the most admired jazz musician of all time. For Miles Davis, the legendary jazz musician from St. Louis, everything had to be fresh and one-of-a-kind. Here at Erkers, we act in the same mindset, constantly innovating the ways we craft our eyewear. The Trumpet collection speaks to expression, everchanging and evolving with the times.
Throughout the decades, a number of big names from the entertainment industry have opted for an Erkers frame. Harry Caray, the sportscaster known for his large, bold glasses, bought his very first pair from Erkers. To name a few more, we are proud to call Joe Buck, Mike Shannon, Shaquille O'Neil, Mark McGuire, Floyd Mayweather, Nelly, Will Smith, and John Goodman some of our past friends and clients.
Taking inspiration from architecture, the lion collection speaks to our roots in the historic Frisco building in downtown St. Louis. Home to our family business for more than 100 years, the Frisco building is known for the decorative lions lining the outskirts of the building. The lion symbolizes courage and strength, which we believe has helped our family succeed for over a century.
Acting as the official photographer for the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair, our ancestors took pictures documenting this unique piece of American history. Offering the first ever ferris wheel rides, people came from all over the world to experience the brand new invention. The Ferris Wheel is an important part of our history, and this collection acts as a reminder of our ancestors' accomplishments.
In the beginning, our family sold anything with a lens. Nearly 100 years ago, we designed the famous goggles worn by Charles Lindbergh throughout his 33.5 hour flight from New York to Paris in 1927, which was the first nonstop flight across the Atlantic. The Goggles collection honors our family's involvement in this important piece of history.
